From <a title=\"1950\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1950\">1950<\/a> through the early <a title=\"1970s\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1970s\">1970s<\/a>, this area provided an increasing market for germanium, but then high purity silicon began replacing germanium in transistors, <a title=\"Diode\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diode\">diodes<\/a>,and rectifiers. Silicon has superior electrical properties, butrequires much higher purity samples\u2014a purity which could not becommercially achieved in the early days. Meanwhile, demand forgermanium in <a title=\"Fiber optics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fiber_optics\">fiber optics<\/a> communication networks, infrared <a title=\"Night vision\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Night_vision\">night vision<\/a>systems, and polymerization catalysts increased dramatically.
