THE BARRISTER’S DREAM
변호사의 꿈.
They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care;
They pursued it with forks and hope;
They threatened its life with a railway-share;
They charmed it with smiles and soap.
그들은 골무로도 찾고 주의깊게 찾아보고 포크와 희망으로 압박해보고 그의 생명을 기찻길로 위협해보고 웃음과 비누로 유혹해보기도 했다.
But the Barrister, weary of proving in vain
That the Beaver’s lace-making was wrong,
Fell asleep, and in dreams saw the creature quite plain
That his fancy had dwelt on so long.
하지만 변호사는 비버의 레이스 만들기가 틀렸다는 고통의 증명에 지쳐서 잠들었다. 그리고 그 꿈에서 평범한 괴물을 보았다. 그리고 그의 환상 속에서 꽤 오래 머물렀다.
He dreamed that he stood in a shadowy Court,
Where the Snark, with a glass in its eye,
Dressed in gown, bands, and wig, was defending a pig
On the charge of deserting its sty.
어느 어두운 법정에 서 있는 꿈을 꾸었다. 눈알을 굴리며 스나크가 가운과 밴드와 가발을 쓰고 어느 돼지가 돼지우리를 황폐화 시켰다는 죄를 논하고 있었다.
The Witnesses proved, without error or flaw,
That the sty was deserted when found:
And the Judge kept explaining the state of the law
In a soft under-current of sound.
목격자가 오류나 결함 없이 증언했다. 그 돼지우리는 찾아냈을 때 황폐화 되어 있었다고. 판사는 법률을 설명했다. 낮고 부드러운 목소리로.
The indictment had never been clearly expressed,
And it seemed that the Snark had begun,
And had spoken three hours, before any one guessed
What the pig was supposed to have done.
그 기소는 결코 깔끔하게 표현된 적이 없다. 그리고 그 돼지가 뭘 하기로 되어 있었는지 누군가 생각하기 이전에 스나크가 시작된 것 같아 보였고, 세시간동안 말한 것 같았다.
The Jury had each formed a different view
(Long before the indictment was read),
And they all spoke at once, so that none of them knew
One word that the others had said.
배심원은 서로 다른 시각을 갖고 있었다. (기소문을 읽기 한참 전부터.) 그리고 그들 모두가 동시에 말했고, 다른 사람이 무슨 말을 하는지는 아무도 몰랐다.
“You must know–” said the Judge: but the Snark exclaimed “Fudge!”
That statute is obsolete quite!
Let me tell you, my friends, the whole question depends
On an ancient manorial right.
판사가 “여러분이 알아야 할 것은” 이라고 판사가 말했을 때, 스나크가 “거짓말!”이라고 외쳤다. 그런 법은 없다고. 고대 영지의 권리에 의존하는 모든 질문을, 여러분들에게 말하겠다고.
“In the matter of Treason the pig would appear
To have aided, but scarcely abetted:
While the charge of Insolvency fails, it is clear,
If you grant the plea ‘never indebted.’
반역죄의 문제에서, 그 돼지는 지원을 받은 것으로 보이지만, 거의 참여하지 않았소. 파산이 문제라면, 명백합니다. 만약 여러분이 사법 거래를 하지 않는다면.
“The fact of Desertion I will not dispute;
But its guilt, as I trust, is removed
(So far as related to the costs of this suit)
By the Alibi which has been proved.
도망친 사실은 다투지 않겠소. 하지만 나는 확신하는데, 그건 죄가 아니오. (이 옷의 가격에 관계가 있는 한) 이미 증명된 알리바이에 의해서 말이오.
“My poor client’s fate now depends on your votes.”
Here the speaker sat down in his place,
And directed the Judge to refer to his notes
And briefly to sum up the case.
나의 불쌍한 고객의 운명은 이제 여러분의 투표에 달렸소.
여기서 발언자가 그의 자리에 앉았다.
판사가 그의 공책을 보았다.
그리고 사건을 요약했다.
But the Judge said he never had summed up before;
So the Snark undertook it instead,
And summed it so well that it came to far more
Than the Witnesses ever had said!
판사는 그가 이전에 요약을 해본적이 없다고 말했다.

그리고 목격자가 말한 것 보다 훨씬 더 많이 이야기했다.
When the verdict was called for, the Jury declined,
As the word was so puzzling to spell;
But they ventured to hope that the Snark wouldn’t mind
Undertaking that duty as well.
평결을 요청하자, 배심원이 거절했다. 말을 이리저리 꼬면서. 하지만 그들은 스나크가 그 의무에 착수하기를 싫어하기를 희망하는 모험을 했다.
So the Snark found the verdict, although, as it owned,
It was spent with the toils of the day:
When it said the word “GUILTY!” the Jury all groaned,
And some of them fainted away.
그래서 스나크가 평결을 내리고, 하지만, 그가 가진대로, 그건 그날의 고생이었다. 그가 “유죄”라고 말했을 때 배심원 모두가 탄성을 질렀다. 그리고 그들중 몇몇은 사라졌다.
Then the Snark pronounced sentence, the Judge being quite
Too nervous to utter a word:
When it rose to its feet, there was silence like night,
And the fall of a pin might be heard.
스나크가 그 문장을 말했을 때 판사는 너무 흥분해서 그 말을 할 수가 없었다. 스나크가 발을 올리자, 밤처럼 조용해졌다. 그리고 핀 하나가 떨어지는 소리가 들렸다.
“Transportation for life” was the sentence it gave,
“And _then_ to be fined forty pound.”
The Jury all cheered, though the Judge said he feared
That the phrase was not legally sound.
“유배형에 처한다” 고 판결이 내려졌다. “그리고 사십 파운드의 벌금을 부과한다.”
판사는 그의 말이 합법적으로 들리지 않을 것이 두렵다고 말했지만 배심원 모두가 환호했다
But their wild exultation was suddenly checked
When the jailer informed them, with tears,
Such a sentence would have not the slightest effect,
As the pig had been dead for some years.
하지만 그들의 사나운 의기양양함은 곧 줄어들었다. 교도관이 그들에게 그 돼지가 몇년 안에 죽을 거라서 그런 말은 전혀 효과가 없다고 눈물로 알렸을 때.
The Judge left the Court, looking deeply disgusted:
But the Snark, though a little aghast,
As the lawyer to whom the defense was entrusted,
Went bellowing on to the last.
판사가 법정을 떠나고, 매우 역겨워 보였다. 하지만 스나크는 살짝 겁에 질린 것 같았지만, 변론이 믿음직했던 변호사가 마지막에 고함치며 떠날 때 같이 나갔다.
Thus the Barrister dreamed, while the bellowing seemed
To grow every moment more clear:
Till he woke to the knell of a furious bell,
Which the Bellman rang close at his ear.
그래서 변호사가 꿈꾸었다. 고함치는것은 좀 더 분명하게 매순간 성장하는 것 처럼 보였다.
종지기가 그의 가까이에 대고 울려대는 성난 종소리에 잠에서 깰 때 까지.
